North Chicago wildlife control tip of the month: What should I do if I find a nest of wild animals in the attic?

If you hear scratching in the North Chicago animal control walls or strange bumps and scratches in the night, it is more likely that you have some kind of wild animal infestation than a poltergeist. If you suspect you may have an animal nesting in your attic, basement, or walls, it is important to address the issue. Tempting thought it may be for some to let their unwelcome, pesky guests take up residence without being harassed, so long as the favor is returned, there are dangers and inconveniences that come from allowing wild animals to nest in or around your house that do not have to do with direct contact or physical harm.

Birds and rodents, for instance, carry diseases like avian flu, rabies, bubonic plague, rat-bite fever, salmonellosis, and the hantavirus, many of which can cause serious illness or fatality. Contracting a disease through touch is a more common method for transmission than airborne illness, but rodent scat, if left unattended, can dry and harden in your house, dispersing particles into the air that are then filtered through your central heating or cooling system, increasing the risk of airborne disease. The longer you leave your furry tenants to their own devices, the more likely it is that they will multiply and the risk of contracting disease will increase due to both the volume of animals and the increase in scat.

Cleaning up rodent scat is a North Chicago wildlife removal process in and of itself that you can read more about here. A good idea once you've cleaned up the mess is to locate and remove the nest to prevent further possibility of contamination or infestation.

Nests may be located on North Chicago pest control eaves, in attics, basements, under porches, in walls, or even in your car engine. Once you've located the nest, it is necessary to be sure the animal has vacated the premises before you begin cleanup or removal. If the animal has not vacated the premises, you can discover more about how to deal with wild animals in or near your home here, or you can call your local animal control professional who will deal with the wild animal safely, humanely, and legally.

In the case of birds nesting in your eaves, fine mesh nets are often used by home-care professionals to deter them. You can also set up a bird feeder away from your home, although you must keep the feeder full to prevent the birds from wandering too far. If the creature in question is nocturnal, search for any entry points to the nest's location during the day and purchase the necessary materials, or make the necessary arrangements, to have such entry points closed off. Do not close off entry points until the nest is vacated. It is best to wait a couple hours after dark to investigate the nest. If no animal is found, close off the entry points and remove the nest by taking the necessary precautions including using latex or vinyl gloves, protective eyewear, wearing long sleeves, pants, and a facemask. Clean up the space in and around the nest's location using bleach and water and let it soak for five minutes before wiping up and disposing of materials in a tied trash bag in your outside disposal container.

If the nest is in your walls, you must find the North Chicago animal trapping entry points and exit points and seal them off. Once you do, however, the creature in question will likely die inside your walls and leave an abominable stink inside your house, while also exposing you to diseases. You may cut open the wall, or hire a professional animal control specialist to do so, and remove the nest and rodents from the wall this way. Be sure to clean thoroughly using the guidelines we have provided.

If you have found a nest and there are still babies or eggs in the nest, see out North Chicago exterminator guidelines on how to handle this before taking action.
